Communication and Connection: Supporting Student-Athletes During COVID-19 Subscribe: http://go.arizona.edu/yt-subscribe University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins is joined by Vice President and Director of Athletics Dave Heeke for this Zoom call. They discuss everything the University is doing to support our nearly 500 student-athletes, especially their academic successes, cheering them on off the field during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dave shares that the Athletics department’s focus has been communication and connection. So, from regularly scheduled Zoom meetings with their coaches and teams, including nutritional guidelines and suggested workouts, to mental health counseling and academic support, students are experiencing multiple touch points from the University to help keep them engaged and connected, despite being dispersed now around the world. We’ve also maintained regular meetings with our Athletics staff, head coaches and executive team to maintain mental wellbeing. And we have to be cognizant about when we do come back, planning ahead for how to re-engage and activate when we’re all together. We’re asking questions like, ‘How do we manage our ticket holders and fan base? What will it look like when we play a scheduled game in our stadiums and arenas?’ We need to think a little differently than we have in the past. Some good news is that the NCAA membership voted to extend eligibility for spring sport athletes so that they can come back and finish their athletic and academic careers. Like all of us, their year was taken away from them. It’s hard to mentally end the year without that last huddle in the locker room. Or last practice together. We will now be able to gather again to cheer on these student-athletes and let them finish out their year the right way. The University of Arizona existed before Arizona was a state. Our first graduating class in 1895 consisted of two women and one male. Since then, we've learned that we're better together. We do more when we work across backgrounds, skills and perspectives. That's how we've become long-time partners with NASA, leaders in both the arts and sciences, and able to prepare students to succeed in a world where most of the jobs today's kindergartners will have don't even exist yet. We know how to converge. #universityofarizona #arizona #university
